Frugal Friday

We like pancakes and waffles with hot syrup at our house. Hungry Jack syrup comes in a rounder, flatter bottle that you can warm each time in the microwave. To save a few dollars, I buy the Hungry Jack only when on sale and I have a coupon. Then, I buy the cheaper store brands to refill it. The bottle lasts through several re-fillings. No one - not even my finicky ones know the difference. Think of other items that this might work for. If you like the packaging of name brands, see if there isn't a way to re-use by refilling with a less expensive replacement.

I like to reuse spray bottles, putting in homemade cleaners.

You are so right about this. We also found the Hungry Jack bottles to be so handy. We just buy the big jugs of syrup and keep refilling the original bottle. It actually holds a little bit more than a standard bottle. It is great for storage and easy for our toddlers to use.

Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! I do something similar with yogurt containers. My three-year-old son never eats an entire container of yogurt; once the saliva gets into it, it continues to digest it (can't save 1/2 a container for later). So, I buy the big, store-brand vanilla yogurt and spoon some into the smaller containers. Wal-Mart used to make small yogurt containers that had lids, so that's what I use.

I also do this with hand-soap dispensers in the bathrooms and kitchen, and our shampoo.

I have a Log Cabin (I think) syrup bottle that is microwave safe. I buy the Costco bottle of syrup to refill with. I refill spray bottles and pump bottles. I soak labels off and then refill with soap out of larger bottles and sometimes I cut the soap with a bit of water so it goes farther. I never use as much laundry soap as the instructions say--my clothes still get clean and there is less chance of residue in my clothes after the washing cycle is done.
